Tired of seeing Darwin's cousins behind bars?
Long-tailed Monkey (Monyet) |
Pig-tailed Macaque (Beruk) |
Why not watch them in their natural habitat for free? After all it's just a half-hour drive from Kuala Lumpur.
Just take the toll-free old Gombak road towards Genting/Bentong. As you pass the Orang Asli (Aboroginies) settlement at the 14th mile, you will have at least four spots the monkeys would come out to play on the road. Just park your car at the road side. The road has very little traffic - thanks to the PLUS Highway - and less fatalities for the Monkeys too.
Do bring along with you nuts, bananas, sugarcane to feed the monkeys from your car windows. Get your cameras and videos ready. For your safety, STAY IN YOUR VEHICLE WHILE FEEDING THEM. The primates can be unpredictably aggresive at times, especially when you feed them.
The most common species here is the long-tailed Monkeys (Monyet in Malay) and the pig-tailed Macaque (Beruk in Malay), the kind that you can train to pick coconuts. Tourist were known to stop their cars, and even buses since the 60s just to feed them and watch them play.
